I've finally retired my Goretex 3-layer XCR jacket for a Montane eVENT Super Fly XT and loving it. Why? ... well several reasons:

I normally use a windproof or soft-shell as my mid layer so only need to put on an hard shell outer layer when the weather really takes a turn for the worse. That means that I'm carrying my outer jacket in my rucksack most of the time. The difference weight of the eVENT Montane jacket versus the older Goretex cannot be underestimated - we scooted up Tryfan via Milestone Buttress at the weekend and the difference was remarkable, admittedly I kept water and food reserves to a minmum too but my backpack was noticably less bulky and considerably lighter and didnt end up weighing me down.

look for this logo for event fabrics - without doubt the best breathable membrane ever ( imho.)

The other thing that bugged me no end with the Gortex jacket was that in heavy rain it would get wet inside. Not from leakage, but from condensation. Having learned a bit more about hyrophylic membranes the problem with the XCR was simply that once the outside of the fabric became sopping wet there was no way that moisture from inside the garment can escape through the membrane - ie: the fabric literally stopped breathing ! The solution is supposed to be to keep the water repellancy treatment on the outside in good condition. That way rain beads up and rolls off, thereby keeping the breathability issue minimised. In practice though the fabric will saturate in certain conditions even if recently treated with a good DWR (durable water repellancy) so I inevitably ended up in clothing about as breathable as a bin liner.

So whats different about the eVENT fabric. In a word - its works, okay, yes that's two words...but it does. Because it weighs less you do less work to carry it so produce less excess heat. Also its thinner so there's far less of a temperature gradient through the fabric to create condensation. The DWR coating and the type of technical weave used on the outer fabric means that water peels off even when faced with an intense gusher of rain so the extra breathability of the fabric stays working at almost full capacity.  Truly amazing stuff.
