Well done Edurne , only the 22nd person in the world and the 1st European woman to have completed mountaineerings toughest challenge. The 37 year old Spaniard completed the magnificient 14 earlier today - around 11.30am Nepal time 17th May 2010 by topping out on Shisha Pangma's main summit.
Since Reinhold Messner first managed the full set of gargantuan peaks in 1986 there has been only one other woman to lay claim to all 14 of the 8000m summits which include the infamous K2 and worlds highest, Everest. 43 year old Oh Eun-Sun from Korea managed in 2009 to complete a 13 year battle to bag the biggest tops. However there is some controversy over Oh's claim for Kanchenjunga as there are no summit photographs due to bad weather at the time however there are some photos close to the top which prompted Edurne and others to question whether Oh made it to the top. Sufficient are the challenges that  Elizabeth Hawley ( 86 years old) who unofficially adjuducates Himalayan mountain climbing records has recorded Oh's summit of Kanchenjunga as disputed.

My personal feeling is that engrained mountaineering ethics along with her previous catalogue of 8000m peaks safely in the bag would make Oh's claim to Kanchenjunga as indisputable as is humanly possible in these circumstances. It would be a desperate shame if it were ever to be found that Oh cheated on one peak and entirely against the principles of mountaineering, lets hope its never proved and mountaineering stays one of the few sports where integrity is as important as the climb itself.
